IELTS Writing Tips
Practical, high-impact tips to improve clarity, coherence, and band scores in IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2.
Plan before you write
Spend 3-5 minutes outlining your main ideas, examples, and structure. A clear plan improves coherence and reduces errors.
Prioritize coherence
Use clear topic sentences and logical paragraph flow. Link ideas with accurate connectors, but avoid overusing them.
Show lexical range safely
Prefer precise vocabulary over rare words. Use collocations and paraphrasing, and avoid unnatural phrasing.
Control grammar accuracy
Mix sentence structures, but prioritize accuracy. Short, clear sentences are better than risky complex ones.
Target the prompt
Answer every part of the question. For Task 2, maintain a consistent position and support it with specific examples.
